Dietary guidance and follow-up are a prerequisite for a good result
Gastric balloon is a non-surgical weight loss method that makes you feel full while limiting your food intake. This type of treatment involves the temporary placement of a balloon in the abdomen. Depending on which balloon treatment you choose, it will be possible to adjust the volume of the balloon throughout the course.
Personal dietician throughout the course
To ensure you a good result with lasting weight loss, you will throughout the entire course (6 or 12 months) be associated with a professional dietician. The dietician will help you with ideas for diet as well as healthy recipes, which will also be advised in the recommended distribution of energy-giving nutrients. At Gastriball, we know that weight loss can be a great challenge and therefore we do a lot to follow and advise our patients closely throughout the process with the stomach balloon.
The dietician will contact you every 14 days, to follow up on your weight loss and to hear about how you feel physically as well as mentally. The mental part is a very important part of weight loss and therefore it is also a part of the conversations that are held every 14 days. From our experience, this period gives you the maximum benefit for your course with stomach balloon.
When your course is coming to an end and your stomach balloon is removed again, the knowledge and guidance you have received along the way from your personal dietician will help give you the best conditions for a healthy lifestyle and thereby achieve a weight loss that lasts a life time.

PROCEDURE AFTER INSERTING AN INTRAGASTRIC BALLOON
The first 3-7 days after an intragastric balloon insertion, you may feel uncomfortable and have nausea. This will go over especially if you take the prescribed medication exactly according to our instructions. It is important to take the medicine before the onset of nausea.
Along with the feasibility study, you will be instructed in dietary changes and exercise, which are crucial to the success of the treatment and your weight loss.
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU YOURSELF PARTICIPATE IN WHAT YOU EAT
You should see the diet plan prepared by the dietician as ideas for your daily diet. It is important that you take part in what you eat during the period with the stomach balloon, as it helps you to keep your weight off afterwards. Overall, a diet plan will consist of three phases:
Phase 1 – Liquid diet based on thin and clear liquids
Phase 2 – Liquid Low Calorie Diet
Phase 3 – Low Calorie Diet
Phase 1 – On the day you receive your balloon, only water / clear liquid may be ingested. For the next 3-5 days, you should continue with this diet and preferably consume at least 1.5-2 liters of fluid a day, to prevent dehydration.
Drink regular or unsweetened beverages (no carbonation), as well as protein water. If fruit juice is ingested, it should be 100% fruit juice without added sugar and it should be diluted so that the natural sugar content is reduced. If you drink a lot of tea, we recommend that it is herbal tea. However, it is not recommended if you experience heartburn or acid regurgitation. Avoid citrus juices, tomato juices, alcohol and caffeinated beverages as they can cause bloating. We recommend that you drink slowly and take small sips to avoid nausea.
If you feel uncomfortable, one more day on thin fluids may be a good idea. Otherwise, proceed to phase 2.
Phase 2 – For the next 10-12 days, feel free to eat a low-calorie diet, here it will also be advantageous if you have a blender or a similar tool to puree your meals. Use foods that are nutritious and have a low sugar content. Eg. vegetable smoothies, soups and pureed vegetables. Avoid carbonated beverages, foods with large chunks or pieces, as well as sugary dishes.
Phase 3 – Here, your diet begins to include more solid foods, with a low content of calories, fat and carbohydrates. Again, remember to eat slowly and hold back if you start feeling uncomfortable. Once you feel ready for it, you can gradually start supplementing solid foods in to your diet.
Start with cooked foods before going for raw or hard foods. While you have the stomach balloon, avoid rice, bread and pasta as these foods can stick to the balloon. In addition, beef and pork should be avoided as much as possible as it is difficult to digest with the balloon. Otherwise, we recommend the following;
- Drink a glass of water 30 minutes before each meal
- Drink two glasses of water 30 minutes after each meal to flush the balloon
- Avoid drinking water during the meal
- Tag evt. multivitamin so you are sure to be covered
- Choose foods that are either cooked or baked – avoid fried foods
- Limit the use of oil, butter, cream, sugar, mayonnaise, jelly, jam and margarine as they may be high in fat or sugar
When you feel ready, you can start eating normal foods again, but remember to pay attention, after as all bodies react differently.
The dietician will contact you before you go to phase 3, to help you get started with the regular diet in the best possible way.
Good advice for a new way of eating and drinking
Remember to eat at a leisurely pace and chew each bite thoroughly, as the gap between your stomach balloon and your intestines is very small. Food that is not chewed thoroughly can block this opening.
Spend at least 20 to 30 minutes eating a meal. If you vomit or have pain under the sternum, you may be eating too fast. Eat 5-6 small meals daily instead of the 3 large meals.
You should drink up to 2 liters of water or low-calorie fluids every day. Avoid alcohol as it contains lots of calories that do not provide nutrition. Avoid carbonated drinks (fizzy drinks).
